What?s the difference between porcelain and ceramic flooring tile?

You?ll find our tile store is different from others. We care about the customer. Metro Floors can answer any question you may have about floor tile. A common question is the one above. Let?s answer it for you.

Porcelain

Porcelain is a tile made of Kaolin clay. It is considered a ceramic but in a class of its own. The clay is hardened in a higher temperature kiln than ceramic. It stands up to heavy foot traffic and is resistant to stains and scratches. It is more costly than ceramic due to being of a higher quality clay. It has colorful designs available for you to choose from. It can even be made to look like wood or stone.

Ceramic

Ceramic is the less expensive of the two. It also is made up of coarse clay that goes through a high-temperature kiln to harden it. The colors are more neutral, though there are unique designs available to you. Ceramic is porous, so until it is glazed, it isn?t waterproof. It is less dense and hard than porcelain, so it's easier to cut, affecting how much time is needed to install it.
