Density
refers to the spacing between the individual tufts or loops that
make up the carpet pile. Dense carpet packs more fiber into the
pile so that it wears longer, resists crushing and matting better
and retains its texture longer in heavy use. Dense carpet also helps
resist stains and dirt by keeping them on the surface of the pile,
where they're more easily cleaned away. You can compare density
by bending the two carpet samples as they would be bent over a stair
thread. The look into the pile. The higher density carpet will show
more pile fiber and less of the backing material. Or dig your fingers
into the pile. A high density carpet will make it difficult to feel
the backing.
While
density is the most reliable indicator of quality, the height of
the carpet pile and the amount of fiber are also used as a measure.
In carpets of equal density, the one with the higher or the heavier
pile will generally perform better. As a general rule, the deeper
and the denser the pile, the better the carpet will perform.
These easy tests will allow you to quickly compare the quality of
loop pile and velvet carpets. For most cut pile constructions, however,
you'll have to consider twist level and twist stability
as well.
Carpet
yarn is formed by twisting two or more yarn strands together before
tufting. The tighter the twist, the better a cut pile carpet will
perform. Look closely at the individual yarn tufts. The twist should
be easy to see, tight and neat throughout. Twist level will usually
be adequate if the tips of individual tufts are neat, tight, and
well defined, not loose and flared open. Then ask if the yarn has
been heat-set. Heat-setting gives the yarn a "twist memory," stabilizing
the yarn to retain its twist through years of use in your home.
Carpet
Cushion : it adds comfort and life to your carpet.
The purchase of a good carpet cushion adds greatly to the comfort
of carpet. Carpet cushioning performs several important functions,
and you should consider it an integral part of every carpet
purchase.
- Properly installed carpet cushion
can add 17% to 50% to a carpet's useful life.
- It cushions up to 90% of the
impact of foot traffic.
- It protects the pile against
crushing and protects the backing.
- It creates a more comfortable
walking surface.
- It insulates cold floors and
absorbs room noises.
Rubber or urethane foam, rubber
waffle and various felts pads are most commonly used. Most are offered
in several thickens and patterns, and most stores will offer a good
selection. A medium thickness is usually the best place to start.
Thin pads can tear, wear or disintegrate too quickly. Ultrathick
pads, on the other hand, can be too soft for comfortable walking
and balance. It's helpful to ask the salesperson to let you feel
the effect of the carpet and pad together.
