On the back of every carpet sample there are usually several different types of carpet labels. At first, they may seem bewildering and highly technical, but they are there to provide you, the consumer, with important information on construction features and warranties.

Always read these labels. They're your assurance of getting the carpet with the performance you want. Here are the three most important labels to look for:

1. Mill label - Identifies the carpet mill and the carpet name, style, construction and content. Many reputable dealers will have their own "private brand" label here in place of the mill label.

2. Fiber producer label - This is probably the most important label to look for, because fiber brand is so important to performance. Make sure that this label warrants the carpet for at least 5 years against stains, dirt, static and wear.

3. Backing label - High quality carpets will often have a label from the manufacturer of the backing.

The "Value" Factor.
As you're shopping for carpet, and particularly as you reach the final stages of selection, you may find yourself deciding between two carpets of different quality and different prices. It is wise to buy the highest quality you can afford. Here's why:

Price equals value.
The phrase "you get what you pay for" may be truer for carpeting than for any other major consumer purchase. Higher quality, longer lasting carpet is directly related to the amount and quality of fiber that goes into the pile. The better the fiber and the denser it's packed, the better the carpet will perform.

Consider cost-per-year.
When deciding how much to spend on new carpeting, it's important to take the long view and consider the cost-per-year. A high quality carpet that lasts 8-10 years is actually less expensive per year than a lower priced carpet that has to be replaced after 3-4 years. Furthermore, you will be enjoying the beauty of the higher quality carpet in your home.

Avoid bargains.
Cheap carpet is easy to spot-it's thin, lightweight, flimsily made. You know the chances are good it will wear out quickly, but the low price still will be tempting. However, remember: when you have to replace it, you not only have to buy new carpet again, you have to go through the cost and inconvenience of installation too.
